Picking the right vehicle for family duty should not be riddled with decisions based on compromises. As the most important tool in managing our busy lives, choices must be made for the right reasons. In the compact SUV segment, every major automaker has, at the very least, one solution on offer. Two such options are the new 2020 Volkswagen Tiguan and the Hyundai Tucson.
Both bring an enormous amount of value to the table but when it comes to space, and meeting all of your expectations, the VW Tiguan is nearly impossible to beat. The Tucson provides a generous 877 litres of trunk space however the Tiguan counters with an enormous 1,065 litres. The Volkswagen’s longer wheelbase has many benefits. One of them is the ability to select an optional 3rd of seating which comes in handy for when the kids bring their friends over before heading out to movie night.
Standard features in both vehicles are numerous and increase exponentially through the trim levels. An 8-inch touchscreen display is available as is a high-end audio system. The Volkswagen Tiguan does offer an available a 12.3-inch Volkswagen Digital Cockpit, which has no equivalent.
While the Tiguan’s utility is unmatched, the driving experience is equally superior. The standard turbocharged 2.0-liter TSI 4-cylinder, which delivers 184-horsepower and 221 lb.-ft. of torque not only trumps the Tucson’s most powerful 181-horsepower and 175 lb.-ft. of torque 2.4-litre 4-cylinder engine by quite a margin power-wise but actually consumes less fuel in the process. On the highway, the Volkswagen requires 8.1L/100km thanks to the included 8-speed automatic transmission and AWD whereas the Hyundai, with the 2.0-liter and AWD, requires 9.2L in the same circumstances, limited somewhat by the presence of its 6-speed automatic transmission.
The Volkswagen Tiguan has another ace up its sleeve and that is the available R-Line package. For true customization, it includes 19-inch wheels, a sport steering wheel, sportier and more aggressive bumpers and unique grille treatment.
The Tiguan’s size, which comes at no penalty, compared to the Tucson, make it a better fit for the average Canadian family. And then, there’s the drive.
