The new Atlas Cross Sport brings exciting SUV vibes with plenty of power, Volkswagen’s acclaimed 4MOTION all-wheel drive, new amenities and plenty of style to boot. Three well-equipped trim levels a choice of either turbocharged four-cylinder or naturally aspirated six-cylinder engines. Volkswagen stands by its new SUV with a four-year, 80,000 km limited warranty and more coverage in other important areas. To help you with your purchasing decision, we compare the Atlas Cross Sport to the established 2020 Hyundai Santa Fe.
Power options in the 2020 Volkswagen Atlas Cross Sport
The Cross Sport offers two engine options for each trim. Both cover a wide range of horsepower and torque that fit many needs. One engine is a 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder that produces 235 horsepower and 258 lb-ft of torque. It reaches peak horsepower at 4,500 rpm, much lower than the Santa Fe’s 235-horsepower turbo four-cylinder at 6,000 rpm. The Santa Fe’s turbo four is standard only in pricier AWD trim grades.
The Volkswagen also features a 3.6-litre six-cylinder available for each trim. It generates 276 horsepower and 266 lb-ft of torque. Santa Fe’s second engine is a 2.4-litre four-cylinder that only produces 185 horsepower and 176 lb-ft of torque.
All Atlas Cross Sport models include AWD. However, this is not offered on all Santa Fe trims.
More capacity in the 2020 Volkswagen Atlas Cross Sport
New SUVs not only have to be advanced and performance-minded, they also have to be very versatile. The Atlas Cross Sport expands to 2,203 litres of cargo volume behind the front seats. The Santa Fe has 180 fewer litres, which amounts to several bags, suitcases, and more. The Volkswagen features 1,141 litres of volume behind the rear seats, which beat the Santa Fe by 120 litres.
Passenger comfort is always important. Occupants enjoy an average of 60 mm of additional front and rear shoulder room in the Atlas Cross Sport versus the Santa Fe.
Standard and available in the Atlas Cross Sport is Adaptive Cruise Control, Blind Spot Monitor, Cross Traffic Alert, and Rear Parking Aid. The Santa Fe lags behind in terms of safety, leaving many of these features unavailable.
