The Atlas Cross Sport is a new mid-size SUV that presents a unique design, 4MOTION AWD, Volkswagen handling, generous capacity and more. It also creates an enjoyable driving experience with Volkswagen’s drivetrain technologies. No matter how great it is, we like to compare the Atlas Cross Sport to established competitors to illustrate how the Volkswagen matches up. Here, we compare it to the 2020 Jeep Grand Cherokee.
The 2020 Volkswagen Atlas Cross Sport creates value
Right off the starting line, the Volkswagen offers a better entry price with a starting MSRP of $41,000. This beats the base Grand Cherokee at $43,186. However, if you want the highest grade level from either line, it will cost you nearly twice as much with the Grand Cherokee.
Receive a better warranty with the 2020 Volkswagen Atlas Cross Sport
If a vehicle is designed properly, the manufacturer will back it up with a solid warranty. Volkswagen includes a four-year / 80,000 km (whichever comes first) bumper-to-bumper limited warranty on the new Atlas Cross Sport. The Grand Cherokee’s bumper-to-bumper warranty only covers three years / 60,000 km, and it has been on the market since 1992. Both vehicles include a five-year / 100,000 km limited powertrain warranty.
Volkswagen also grants a seven-year corrosion perforation warranty. The Grand Cherokee only allows five years of similar coverage.
The 2020 Volkswagen Atlas Cross Sport is more spacious
The Atlas Cross Sport maximizes available interior volume, and the Grand Cherokee falls short. Volkswagen occupants receive up 71 mm of additional front and rear leg and shoulder room in key areas. It’s not a desirable situation when tired legs and a cramped family result from extensive travel, and you have a greater chance of experiencing it in the Grand Cherokee.
When cargo volume is a must, the Atlas Cross Sport delivers. With the rear seats folded, the Volkswagen opens up 2203 litres of volume. The Jeep offers 269 fewer litres—an equivalent of some compact vehicle trunks. The Volkswagen features 1,141 litres behinds the rear seats. The Jeep only provides 1,028 in the same configuration.
All Grand Cherokee models only have the option of 4WD. The Volkswagen features 4MOTION AWD, which is better suited for Canada’s road conditions.
